ABOUT
6138-6146 DELMAR
Built in 1923 and designed by Norman B.
Howard, who was responsible for several of the commercial
designs in the neighborhood, the 6138-40 Delmar Commercial Building
is one of the most unusual commercial buildings along Delmar
Boulevard. The 6138-40 Delmar Commercial Building played an
important role in supporting commercial vitality of the business
district, providing two storefronts on the first floor and two
residential units on the second floor. Because of its unusual
stylistic design, this building is considered by those in the
historical preservation realm to be one of the more architecturally
significant commercial buildings in the business district.
Prior to the restoration, the building was in relatively poor
shape due to neglect and previous poor restoration efforts.
James G. Staat Tuckpointing and Waterproofing Inc. employed dramatic
restoration procedures. All the tuckpointing of the building
had to be done in accordance with the proper historical standards.
The result was quite striking. The 6138-46 Delmar Commercial
Buildings won a
2004's Most Enhanced Award
from Landmarks Association of St. Louis.

TESTIMONIALS FOR
6138-6146 DELMAR
"On the two historic
rehabilitation projects at 6136-40 and 6142-46 Delmar, Staat
Tuckpointing faced both the consequences of sever neglect and previous
poor repointing efforts. Although these look like simple projects,
in reality, they were quite complex, including areas on the facade that
required matching with salvaged brick due to damaged bricks. They
impressed me with both their knowledge of accepted masonry preservation
practices, and the care and skill with which they repaired damaged walls
and repointed both buildings. Only the best masons can
successfully complete this kind of work so well that you cannot see
where they had been working on the finished project, and Staat certainly
did that with these projects."
